The apparatus has a roller (4) with a rotation side. Convex sections are arranged, spaced equally apart around the circumference of the rotation side. A concave section is provided between each pair of adjacent convex sections. A base board (5) generates instruction signals corresponding to the rotation of the roller. The base board is connected to a contact probe module (6). This includes forwards and backwards probes in the convex section and a common probe in the concave section between the forwards and backwards probes. The common probe is pressed upwards by a convex section to contact the forwards probe. A forwards instruction is generated when a force acts on the roller to rotate the roller in a clockwise direction. The common probe is pressed upwards to contact the reverse or backwards probe to generate a reverse instruction when a force acts on the roller which rotates the roller in an anti clockwise direction.
