<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To start an operation-dependent application upon a user operation on a printer connected to host equipment, and hold in the printer data generated and loaded into the printer. <P>SOLUTION: The printer has host equipment application starting operation detecting means as part of user instruction detecting means, command generating and transferring means for transferring a start command to the host equipment upon application starting instruction detection, and data holding means for holding data transferred from the host equipment upon save command detection.
