PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for manufacturing an optical fiber by which the optical fiber having reduced polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is obtained by efficiently giving twist to the optical fiber. SOLUTION: In the method of manufacturing the optical fiber by coating an optical fiber obtained by melting and drawing an optical fiber preform with a resin to form a coated optical fiber and successively advancing the coated optical fiber on a roller surface 22 of a rotary roller 21 having a rotary shaft 24 in a direction intersecting the advancing direction of the coated optical fiber and moving back and forth in the direction of rotary shaft 24 to give the twist to the coated optical fiber, the coated optical fiber is advanced on the roller surface 22 composed of a rotary surface formed so that the central part in the direction of the rotary shaft 24 is relatively higher.
