PURPOSE: Provided is a swallow-tailed liquid crystal compound having an alkoxy group, which can provide a liquid crystal composition having a broad range of temperatures showing an antiferroelectric phase and a low minimum temperature. CONSTITUTION: The achiral swallow-tailed compound having an oxygen atom-containing alkoxy group is represented by formula 1, wherein I is an integer of 6-12; A represents -O- or a single bond(-); X is H or F; R is CmH2m+1 (wherein m is an integer of 1-10), CH2CnF2n+1 (wherein n is an integer of 1-3), CH2=CH-CH2- or HCCCH2-. A liquid crystal composition is obtained by mixing the compound with an optical active compound as a chiral dopant.
