COMBINATION CONTIUNUOUS/BATCH FERMENTATION PROCESSES

In the production of potable alcohols, a continuous fermentation stage is employed to pitch and/or initially ferment a wort containing fermentable sugars. An exemplary continuous stage involves the use of a gas lift bioreactor employing superflocculant yeast and stringent oxygen control. The continuous stage can then be followed by sending an at least partially fermented discharge from the continuous process to a batch processing stage for finishing. 16 claims, 29 figures
