<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a side light type surface light source device which can be made thin and produce uniform light emission quantity. <P>SOLUTION: The side light type surface light source device is equipped with a light guide plate 11 and a light source 2 irradiating the light guide plate 11 with light. The side face of the light guide plate 11 has an arc recess 11a where light enters, and the light source 2 is housed in the recess 11a. The light guide plate 11 is a trapezoid form having the width increasing as the distance from the side face having the recess 11a where light enters increases, and the plate has a light exiting face 14 on the side face opposing to the recess 11a where light enters.
