PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate change of software for change of specification by a fact that contact and detachment of a cleaning device are performed by different tasks when cleaning an intermediate transfer member. SOLUTION: In this image forming apparatus with developers 3 of a plurality of colors, a photo conductor 1 which generates an image, the intermediate transfer member 4 which overlaps colors and an intermediate transfer member cleaning device 6 which cleans the intermediate transfer member, it is provided with a main control means 11 having a function of controlling contact and detachment of the intermediate transfer member cleaning device 6 to the intermediate transfer member 4, a function of controlling an operation before image formation, a function of controlling an image forming operation, a function of performing cleaning by bringing the intermediate transfer member cleaning device 6 into contact with the intermediate transfer member 4 in the operation before image formation and a function of detaching the intermediate transfer member cleaning device 6 from the intermediate transfer member 4.
