PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an image display device capable of efficiently utilizing light rays, thereby displaying a bright image and also facilitating the observation of images. SOLUTION: The image display device is provided with a display means 1 for displaying the image, and an eyepiece 2 for guiding the image as a virtual image to observer's pupils. The display means 1 is constituted of a liquid crystal display device 11, a back light 12 and an optical element 13. The image light modulated by the liquid crystal display device 11 is guided as the virtual image to an optical pupil 9 through the eyepiece 2. It is allowed to use a hologram element instead of the eyepiece 2. As for the light intensity distribution of the optical pupil 9, the distribution in an x-direction in the plane is different from that in a y-direction orthogonal to the x-direction.
