PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming method using a heat developable photosensitive material capable of producing an image under stable sensitivity with a compact laser exposure and heat development device in which a laser exposure section and a heat development section are arranged close to each other. SOLUTION: In the image forming method which forms an image using an image recording apparatus comprising a laser irradiation means to subject a heat developable photosensitive material including a photosensitive silver halide, a non-photosensitive organic silver salt, a reducing agent and a binder on at least one surface of a support to scanning exposure with laser light, and a means to convey the heat developable photosensitive material in a secondary scanning direction and to guide it to a heat development section, the heat developable photosensitive material includes at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (1a): R-Y<SB>1</SB>-(L<SB>1</SB>)<SB>n1</SB>-CX<SB>1</SB>X<SB>2</SB>X<SB>3</SB>, formula (1b): R-Y<SB>2</SB>-L<SB>2</SB>-CX<SB>1</SB>X<SB>2</SB>X<SB>3</SB>, and formula (1c): R-Y<SB>3</SB>-(L<SB>3</SB>)<SB>n2</SB>-CX<SB>1</SB>X<SB>2</SB>X<SB>3</SB>, and the distance between a scanning line by the laser irradiation means and an inlet of the heat development section is≤50 cm.
