A light valve processes a beam transmitted by a color separator (15) and the scrolling unit (20) according to an image signal to form a color picture. A projection lens (45) magnifies the color picture formed by the light valve (40) and projects the magnified color picture onto a screen. A polarization conversion system (60) between the color separator and the light valve converts the incident beam. The incident beam is converted into a beam with a single polarization.
