PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a joining method of a steel pipe with a mechanical joint, reducing the weight of a tool and making it compact as compared with a joining tool such as a chain wrench, surely joining the upper and lower steel pipes, and surely joining the upper and lower steel pipes even if a space at the periphery of the steel pipe is narrow, and the steel pipe with the mechanical joint used in it. SOLUTION: A lower steel pipe 1 having a first mechanical joint 2 at the upper end and an upper steel pipe 3 having a second mechanical joint 4 fitted to the first mechanical joint 2 by rotation at the lower end are vertically joined to each other. One end of a towing line 7 is wound round the upper steel pipe 3, and the other end of the towing line is pulled by a towing tool 5 to apply a turning force to the upper steel pipe 3, thereby fitting the second mechanical joint 4 to the first mechanical joint 2.
