PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a general-purpose article transfer device capable of coping with articles stored in a container according to information on the quantity and arrangement or the like without installing a dedicated pick up/transfer device. SOLUTION: This article transfer device comprises the container having a large number of placing means, a waiting means allowing the container to wait, and the pick up/transfer means holdingly picking up the articles from the container and transferring the picked up articles to the placing sections of a processing conveyor. The pick up/transfer device is installed so that article pick up/transfer pattern can be changed based on the stored state of the articles in the container. The pick up/transfer device can be changed to a first pick up/transfer pattern in which, for example, the articles are picked up from one container allowed to wait by the waiting means or a second pick up/transfer pattern in which the articles are picked up from the plurality of containers allowed to wait by the waiting means.
