PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for charging a battery of an electric vehicle are provided to charge the battery of the electric vehicle by using a driving system of the existing electric vehicle without an additional device. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for charging a battery of an electric vehicle includes a three-phase motor, an inverter, and a controller. The inverter(120) is installed between a battery and the three-phase motor(130) in order to convert DC power to AC power. The controller(180) is used for controlling an operation of the inverter. A connector(140) is installed at an opposite side to the inverter. The connector includes terminals corresponding to each phase of the three-phase motor. A detector is installed at the connector in order to detect a connecting state between the connector and an external connector.
