PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly detect an oil level by a float, in a hermetic compressor in which pressure in sealed vessel is high. SOLUTION: The hermetic compressor has the sealed vessel 12 including a drive element 14 and a compression element 18 driven by the drive element, and the float 55 for detecting the oil level in the sealed vessel. The float is constituted of a hollow and spherical outer shell, and high pressure gas sealed in the outer shell. A specific gravity of the float is larger than that of refrigerant to be used, and lighter than that of oil. Gas pressure in the outer shell is higher than the pressure in the sealed vessel.
