The piston rod, in a piston/cylinder assembly, has a plastics structure with reinforcement carbon fibers forming the core (3) of the piston rod (1) enclosed within a metal tube (5), with a constant mantle outer surface (7). The blank for the core is of larger dimensions than the interior of the tube, and the tube is shaped around it in a press fit. The metal tube has an opening (9) at least at one end, for surplus plastics material to escape. The core has at least two shoulders (11,13), aligned against each other, as support surfaces for the core within the outer tube.
