PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zoom lens of configuration to make a size smaller and variable power higher while well maintaining imaging performance. SOLUTION: The zoom lens has, successively from an object side, a first lens group G1 having positive refractive power, a second lens group G2 having negative refractive power, and a third lens group G3 having positive refractive power and employs the configuration that, during variable magnification from a wide angle end to a telephoto end, the spacing between the first lens group G1 and the second lens group G2 and the spacing between the second lens group G2 and the third lens group G3 vary. The zoom lens has a diffraction optical face Gf on at least one lens face among the first lens group G1, the second lens group G2 and the third lens group G3. The third lens group G3 has a forward lens group G3F which exists on the object side and has the positive refractive power and a backward lens group G3R which exists on the image side and has at least a positive lens. When the effective diameter (diameter) of the diffraction optical face Gf is defined as C and the focal length of the entire part of the lens system at the wide angle end as fw, the condition of equation 0.2<C/fw<5.0 is satisfied.
