A glass base material working method, a worked glass product, and a stress applicator, the method comprising the steps of applying heat to a glass base material (1) to increase the temperature of the glass base material (1), pressing an indenter (2) against the glass base material to apply a rather small external force thereto, cooling the glass base material to form a compression stress part (4) having an etching rate for acid liquid (etching liquid used) different from etching rates on the other portions on and near the surface of the glass base material (1), and applying chemical etching by the acid liquid to the glass base material (1) in which the compression stress part (4) is formed to form recesses and projections on the surface of the glass base material (1).
