There is described apparatus and a method for the treatment of potentially particulate organic waste material, the apparatus (10) includes: hopper mean s (12) having flow control means (18) for controlling the rate of flow of material (14) from said hopper means (12); at least one pyrolysis unit (20, 22) having heating means (24, 26) for heating said material, said at least o ne pyrolysis unit (20, 22) having therein means in the form of a cascade of van es (60) for controlling a rate of flow therethrough; means (66) for removing gaseous products generated in said at least one pyrolysis unit (20, 22), sai d gaseous products being recycled or collected; and, residual treated waste material collection means (32).
