PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for surface treatment of magnesium alloy which improves solid-phase joining-and a brazing properties by forming a dense thin film on the surface of a magnesium alloy. SOLUTION: On the surface of the magnesium alloy surface treated with the conventional method, a very thick magnesium oxide film is formed and the joining property is extremely degraded. This is because the specific volume (volume/mass) of this magnesium oxide film formed on the magnesium alloy surface is smaller than the specific volume of the magnesium alloy base phase. If a film having a larger specific volume than the specific volume of the base-phase is formed on the magnesium alloy surface, this surface film becomes dense, does not allow invasion of the atmosphere and steam, and forms a thin film, thereby improving the joining property of the magnesium alloy. This objective is achieved by a fluorine ion type surface treating method which can form a surface film having larger specific volume than the specific volume of the magnesium alloy-basic phase.
