PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus and an image display system which are capable of long distance transmission in spite of being super-high definition, are easy to operate and facilitate cable laying. SOLUTION: An imaging device 2 outputs picked-up analogue image signals of levels which accord to the quantities of the light of the optical images of a photographic subject formed by impinging in two or more split imaging regions in parallel from the split imaging regions, with a super-high definition camera in which an imaging region composed by arranging pixels whose number is two times the HDTV image or more into a two-dimensional matrix is split into the two or more split imaging regions. These analogue picked-up image signals are converted into four sets of HDTV serial signals in an array converter 5 via an A/D converter 3 and a signal processor 4. An optical transmitter 6 converts the four sets of HDTV serial signals into four sets of light modulation signals whose wavelength bands differ, subsequently generates one optical multiple signal by their wavelength division multiplex, and light-transmits this signal to an optical fiber.
