A process for producing carboxylated and/or hydroxylated arenes by reacting an arene having at most three aromatic hydrocarbon rings with formic acid in an organic solvent in which the arene and formic acid are soluble in the presence of a Pd catalyst and an oxidizing agent which can oxidize in the reaction the zero valent palladium of the Pd catalyst into divalent palladium to conduct the carboxylation and/or hydroxylation of the arene in one pot.
