PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for driving a liquid crystal display device are provided to relax the flicker felt by the eyes of the human by increasing the refresh rate of the screen. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for driving a liquid crystal display device includes a gate driving unit, a data driving unit, a pattern detection unit(630), a pattern comparison unit and a signal control unit. The gate driving unit supplies the signal to turn on the switching element in response to the control signal to the switching device. The data driving unit applies the data signal to the pixels by selecting the gray level voltage corresponding to the image data. The pattern detection unit(630) detects the patterns of the image data. The pattern comparison unit compares the inversion driving pattern with the result of the pattern detection unit. And, the signal control unit selectively drives the frame frequency in response to the result of the pattern comparison unit.
