PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the light 34 oscillating at a constant wavelengthλ<SB>0</SB>and generated to clamp the gain at a prescribed value from being emitted from an output end surface. SOLUTION: A semiconductor amplifier is provided with a semiconductor substrate 21, an active layer 22 formed on the semiconductor substrate, buried layers 23 and 24 formed on the semiconductor substrate and at sides of the active layer, and a clad layer 25b formed on the active layer. Non-reflection coats 39a and 39b are given to both end surfaces 30a and 30b. The light 32 made incident from one end surface 30a is amplified in a process where it is transmitted through an optical wavelength including the active layer formed along a transmission direction of the light and is emitted from the other end surface 30b. A diffraction grating 29 for oscillating the light 34 at a constant wavelengthλ<SB>0</SB>is formed in a side position of the active layer 22 and in a direction orthogonal to the transmission direction of the light.
