The invention concerns a hydraulic elevator with a pressure accumulator (17). Hydraulic oil can be conveyed by a pump (13) between the pressure accumulator (17) and a hydraulic drive (2), such that the direction of rotation of the pump (13) can be changed. An electrically controlled cylinder line stop valve (12) is installed on one side of the pump (13), and an electrically controlled accumulator line stop valve (15) is installed on the other side of the pump (13). Both valves (12, 15) are ON-OFF valves. In order to prevent sudden disruptive pressure changes when the valves (12, 15) are opened before the start of travel of the car (1), means (13, 14, 24, 25) are present, which, together with a pressure switch (22) and a load pressure sensor (31), can be operated in such a way that the pressure in the section of the line between the pump (13) and the cylinder line stop valve (12) and in the section of the line between the pump (13) and the accumulator line stop valve (15) can be varied by these means in such a way that, when the car (1) is at a standstill, the pressure differences are largely eliminated before the valves (12, 15) are opened. The invention also concerns a suitable control method. The invention allows energy-saving and comfortable operation of a hydraulic elevator.
