PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite material of clay and a polymer compound, a method for the production of the composite material and its use, more particularly, to provide a vulcanized material having low gasoline permeability, a rubber composition as a raw material for the vulcanized material and a composite material composed of clay and a polymer compound and suitable as a raw material of the rubber composition. SOLUTION: The composite material of clay and a polymer compound is produced by polymerizing 100 pts. wt. of a vinyl monomer in the presence of 1-100 pts. wt. of clay, 1-100 pts. wt. of water and a water-soluble polymerization initiator. The polymerization of the vinyl monomer is preferably carried out in the copresence of a chain transfer agent containing at least one hydroxy group and at least one mercapto group in the molecule. The composite material is useful as an additive for various polymers. The addition of the composite material improves mechanical properties and lowers gasoline permeability.
