PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a user from touching a paper feeding roller in a document feeding mechanism when opening and closing a protection cover member and also to facilitate jamming disposal processing by reducing the number of parts in an automatic document feeder used in an image forming apparatus or the like. SOLUTION: One end of the protective cover member 41 is turnably supported by a the document feeding mechanism housing, and a gap regulating part 51 by which a gap regulated by the document feeding mechanism housing and the free end of the protection cover member is narrowed when closing the protection cover member is closed at a part corresponding to the paper feeding roller 21b is provided on a free end side. One end of a document feeding tray 11 is turnably supported on the opposite side end of the document feeding mechanism housing where one end of the protective cover member is attached, and when the document feeding tray is turned in a direction in which it is separated from a document reverse tray positioned on the lower side of the document feeding tray in a state that the protective cover member is opened, the document feeding tray abuts on the free end side of the protective cover member and is supported by the free end.
