PURPOSE: An apparatus is provided to quickly perform an emergency braking operation and achieve improved safety by braking an elevator rope through the use of expansion force of high pressure gas. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus(1) comprises a fixed shoe(200) fixed on a bracket so as to compress and lock an elevator rope; a movable brake shoe(300) opposed to the fixed shoe and coupled to a piston rod(410) of a hydraulic cylinder(400) such that the movable brake shoe brakes and release the elevator rope; and a hydraulic device(500) for driving the hydraulic cylinder. An oil fills the piston rod side of the inner space of the hydraulic cylinder, and a high pressure gas fills the side opposite from the piston rod, centering from a piston(420) fixed at an end of the piston rod. The hydraulic device has a motor arranged in an oil tank(510). An eccentric cam mounted on the shaft of the motor, and a pumping valve operating by the eccentric cam are arranged in the oil tank.
