In a continuous rolling mill in which discrete billets are rolled through a plurality of roll stands into successive product lengths having front and tail ends, a first o f the roll stands is operated at a delivery speed that exceeds the take up speed of a successive second roll stand. Successive product lengths exiting the first roll stand are directed away fr om the mill pass line to a welding station, and from the welding station back to the mill pass line f or continued rolling in the second roll stand. The front and tail ends of the successive product lengths are Welded together at the welding station.
