The assembly to sever the end of a web running off an empty or nearly empty roll (1), especially of paper or cardboard, has at least one cutter (7) orthogonal to the direction (L) of web travel. The cutter is moved across the web (2) at a considerably faster speed than the web movement e.g. at 100 m/second, to give at least one angled cut line (S) with a short point (2.2) at the end of the web. The cutter is moved across the whole width (B) of the web, preferably using two cutters (7,7a). The cutter is a laser or a high pressure water jet.
