INERT ANODE DESIGNS FOR REDUCED OPERATING VOLTAGE OF ALUMINUM PRODUCTION CELLS

Inert anodes (50) useful in electrolytic aluminum production cells are disclosed. The inert anodes (50) have sloped bottom surfaces (54) with controlled bubble release angles (A). In one embodiment, the bottom surface (54) is substantially conical with a bubble release angle (A) of up to 30 degrees. The cross-sectional size of the inert anodes (50) is also controlled in order to maximize efficiency of the cells. The inert anodes (50) may be provided in arrays in aluminum production cells in order to achieve commercial cell currents.
