PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an active part used for a surge arrester. SOLUTION: This active part comprises two fittings for connection located spaced from each other along an axis, at least a cylindrical varistor columnar body arranged between two fittings for connection, and at least a dielectric loop. The loop is supported by two fittings for connection, so that the active part is held and its contact force is formed. The active part has a low physical height and shows a low usage of material. This is attained by locating at least one of two fittings for connection at right angles to the axis, which has substrates and electric-contact shaped electrodes formed integrally on the substrates. A shoulder-shaped support means further is arranged for the dielectrics loop, formed on the substrates and/or formed integrally on the end of the substrates. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
