PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus that can extract automatically a still image according to variance in a photographing status and object's movement, etc. contained in a series of video data, and which perform an indicator output by picture expression by which the content of photographing can be recognized intuitively, and an image processing method thereof. SOLUTION: This image processing apparatus has a moving video data input portion 10 which extracts a plurality of frame pictures with audio information from video data, and store them to a frame memory; an amount of features detection unit 31 which detects the variance of the amount of features contained in a plurality of frame pictures which constitute video data; a display image selecting portion 32 which chooses a specified frame picture from a plurality of frame pictures, based on the variance property of a picture or a voice detected by the amount of features detection unit; a picture processing portion 33 which processes a frame picture selected by the display image selecting portion in a specific expression form; a monitor 50 which displays the specific frame picture selected by the image selecting portion as a still image, and a printer 60.
