PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce consumption power of a rear face light source without deteriorating displayed videos. SOLUTION: A video display unit comprises: a maximum brightness value detection part 14 for outputting the maximum brightness value signal 23 indicating the maximum brightness value of a video signal 21 as a unit of prescribed period; a light source brightness control unit 11 for changing brightness of the rear face light source 4 in accordance with the maximum brightness value signal 23 in the direction for reducing the brightness when the maximum brightness value is small, and increasing the brightness when the maximum brightness value is large; and a transmittance ratio control part 13 for canceling the change of the brightness generated in light transmitting pixel by the change of the brightness of the rear face light source 4, by changing corresponding relation of the brightness of the video signal 21 and transmittance of the pixel in accordance with the maximum brightness value signal 23.
