PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which enables a user to put an original in and out of any side of the four side faces. SOLUTION: An original cover 6 arranged on an original platen 5 is opened and closed relative to the original platen 5 by rotationally moving around each of axes L1 to L4 formed independently from each other in proximity on the respective lateral edges existing on the four side faces of a copying machine 1. The respective axes L1 to L4 are formed of hooks 11a to 11d which can be engaged and disengaged with and from shaft sections 12a to 12d of the axes L1 to L4 and are fixed to the bottom surface of the original cover 6 and solenoids 13a to 13d which have the respective shaft sections 12a to 12d capable of advancing and retreating freely engageably and disengageably with and from the respective hooks 11a to 11d and are fixed to the original platen 5. Only the shaft sections 12a to 12d of the solenoids 13a to 13d corresponding to the opening and closing direction of the original cover 6 engage the hooks 11a to 11e in the advance state and only one of the axes L1 to L4 is formed.
