PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving a dimmer element which responds quickly and consumes only small power, a program to implement the method for driving, a dimmer device using the method for driving and a camera with the dimmer device mounted thereon. SOLUTION: The transmittance of the dimmer element (an electrochromic element) is varied and is made to converge to a constant value corresponding to a potential difference applied to an electrode and is made to maintain the converged value even after halting the potential difference application. In the method of driving the dimmer element by applying a specified potential difference to the electrode so as to obtain to the objective transmittance, a potential difference corresponding to the converged transmittance is defined as a convergence potential difference, and driving is carried out by applying a driving potential difference (V<SB>E</SB>) which is a potential difference larger than a difference between a convergence potential difference (0V) for the present transmittance (100%) and a convergence potential difference (V<SB>S1</SB>or V<SB>S2</SB>) for the objective transmittance (50% or 25%) for a time period (T<SB>1a</SB>or T<SB>1b</SB>) specified corresponding to the difference between the present and objective transmittance values and subsequently applying the convergence potential difference (V<SB>S1</SB>or V<SB>S2</SB>) for the objective transmittance.
