System (100) for detecting copyright infringement within the World Wide Web, whereby a file or document (30) is provided with a digital watermark. A search and recording means (20) is used to located the document within the web and record the URLs at which the document is stored. The URLs in which the document is stored or located are recorded in order that appropriate action can be taken. An independent claim is made for a method of detecting copyright impingement within the World Wide Web.
