PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading device that can speedily start up by omitting a homing operation and starting the scanning operation without carrying out accurate positioning operation when a certain condition is met when the device is previously actuated by a pre-scan start instruction. SOLUTION: The image reading device, equipped with a carriage which is mounted with a light source which lights up a document and a mirror guiding reflected light from the document lit up by the light source in a scanning direction of the document, a sensor for detecting the home position of the carriage, and a line sensor which reads an image of the document from the reflected light from the sensor, checks whether or not a mode of prescanning is to be performed (step 101) when positioning the carriage by performing homing processing, and turns on the light source (step 103) by omitting the homing operation of a step 102 when the sensor detects the carriage in the prescanning mode.
