PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup optical system wherein various kinds of aberration including chromatic aberration are satisfactorily corrected, and also, color reproducibility is excellent. SOLUTION: The image pickup optical system is constituted of at least one diffraction optical element having a positive refractive power, at least one refraction optical element having a positive refractive power and at least one refraction optical element having a negative refractive power, and provided thatλMdenotes a wavelength serving so that the diffraction optical element attains the maximum diffraction efficiency, the following condition: 450 nm<λM<600 nm is satisfied.
