A machine tool spindle journalled in a housing for rotation and axial reciprocation, comprises two axially spaced sets of circumferentially spaced orifices open in the bearing surface for the supply of pressurized bearing fluid. The spindle (13) is rotated by gearing (15), (17), and each of the orifices (21) is supplied with liquid by a metering unit (22). Each of the units extends into a radial bore (23) in housing (11), and comprises a capillary tube (31), silver soldered to a screw (29), the liquid being supplied through passages (32), (26), the latter being sealed by a plug (22). A pressure gauge (35) is connected to each orifice (21), and the liquid is drained into a reservoir (40) through passages (45), (46) and (48). |
