A control system 24 for controlling a safety system 40 of a vehicle comprises a plurality of wheel speed sensors 30 generating a plurality of wheel velocity signals, a lateral acceleration sensor 32 generating a lateral acceleration signal and a controller 26 coupled to the plurality of wheel speed sensors 30, the lateral acceleration sensor 32 and the safety system 40 wherein the controller 26 is operable to calculate a final reference vehicle velocity in response to a number of inputs including at least the plurality of wheel velocity signals and is further operable to control the safety system 40 in response to the final reference vehicle velocity. The system may further include a steering angle sensor 35, yaw rate sensor 28, while the controller may determine correction factors, and calculate the final reference velocity in response to a learning function. |
