PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical fiber capable of increasing the degree of freedom in adjusting wavelength dispersion and an adjustable wavelength range. SOLUTION: An optical fiber 10 is provided with a core region 12 extending along a predetermined axis X, and a cladding region 14 surrounding the core region 12. The clad region 14 has first to third regions 16 to 20 provided coaxially with the core region 12 in the order of the first region 16 surrounding the core region 12 and the second region 18 surrounding the first region 16. At least one of the first to the third regions includes, in a main medium having a predetermined refractive index, a region made of an auxiliary medium having a refractive index different from that of the main medium. Let n[0] be the average refractive index of the core region 12, and n[k] (k=1, 2, ..., N+1) be the average refractive index of the k-th regions 16 to 20. Then the optical fiber satisfies a relationship of n[0]>n[1], and n[i]>n[i+1] provided that, for all i, i=h, h+1, ..., h+m, where h and m are natural numbers. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI |
