PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium for high density recording which has electromagnetic conversion characteristics especially high in an output and has a low friction coefficient. SOLUTION: A magnetic recording medium formed with non-magnetic layers and magnetic layers in this order on a non-magnetic support object is characterized in that protrusions of 3-7 nm in height per 23,000μm<SP>2</SP>of a surface area in a region of wavelength component≤30μm are 200 pieces or less and average roughness Wa of a surface in a region of wavelength component >30μm is≥3.3 nm on a surface of a magnetic layer measured using a non-contact three dimensions surface structure analysis microscope.
