<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved head used in a drive. <P>SOLUTION: The head includes a heater element for generating heat sufficient to make the head to take a shape similar to its shape at the time of an operation (writing or the like) on a recording medium. The heater element is activated while no operation is executed, and the head generate an amount of heat substantially similar to that during the operation. Thus, the same temperature (also called "operation temperature") is kept irrespective of the operation (writing or the like). Thus, the head maintains almost a constant shape, thereby maintaining a floating height. The heater element is realized to use a loss mechanism intrinsic to a writing converter by disposing a center tap in, e.g., the writing converter. In this case, the current common to each other is applied during the writing operation.
