The tool comprises a rotating roller(9) carried by a support(8) which is driven along the path of an adhesive bead by a feed drive unit(10). The roller deforms in at least the radially outer contact area(16) and is rotated by a drive system(15) at a controlled speed. The covering mat acts as a sealing mat and is applied and bonded to the uneven inner side of a painted vehicle door in the final assembly stage. An adjustable compression spring is located on the roller support(8) between a roller bearing and a bearing support. The roller support is an angled wing-like structure with a shaft(14) at the apex of the angle carrying the roller(9). Variable weights(12) are located at a free end of one of the angle shanks(11) to produce a compression force on the roller. The free end of the other shank(13) is connected by a joint to the feed drive unit(10) which can be a linear drive and/or a robot. An electric motor(15) is mounted on the roller support and is coaxial with the roller shaft. A control unit ensures that roller peripheral speed(U) is greater than the roller support feeding speed(v).
