PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hologram recorder which is usable as a small-sized optical pickup by making good use of prisms as substitutions for beam splitters and reflecting mirrors. SOLUTION: The hologram recorder has a laser light source, the first prism having ridgelines, the second prism, a spatial optical modulator and an optical recording medium and consists of (1) the configuration to branch the laser beam from the laser light source by making the laser beam incident on two surfaces holding the ridgelines of the first prism in-between, (2) the configuration to interest the laser beams made incident on the respective two surfaces with each other and to spatially modulate at least either of the branched laser beams and (3) the configuration to make the laser beams incident on the second prism thereafter and to emit the laser beams from the second prism so as to intersect again on the optical recording medium.
