A process for producing a high-purity epoxy resin, which comprises adding an alkali metal hydroxide to a bifunctional epoxy resin represented by the general formula (I) in which the content of components wherein n=0 is 70% to 100%, excluding 100%, and reacting the ingredients at a temperature of 95 to 150°C to yield a polyfunctional epoxy compound represented by the general formula (II). The epoxy resin is characterized by having a total chlorine content of 500 ppm or lower.
