PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus for reducing a release time lag without causing increase in the cost and power consumption and increase in the circuit area. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus includes: an exposure period setting means (104-1) for generating an exposure period timing signal; an imaging element control means (102) for controlling operations of an imaging element (101); a time measurement means (104-3) for measuring an elapsed time from the production of the exposure period timing signal; and an imaging apparatus control means (104-3) for controlling the imaging element control means and the exposure period setting means. The time measurement means (104-3) measures an elapsed time (t1) from the production of the exposure period timing signal just after a release operation until the start of an exposure setting operation by the exposure period setting means, and when a time (t2) until the production of a succeeding exposure period timing signal calculated from the measured elapsed time is a prescribed time or over, the imaging apparatus control means (104-3) decreases the time of the production of the succeeding exposure period timing signal more than an ordinary exposure period.
