Ultrasonic device for detecting surface defects, e.g. cracks, in at least partially metallic components, e.g. pipes. The inventive device comprises electromagnetic ultrasonic transmitter and ultrasonic receiver (EMUS). The transmitter emits horizontally polarized, or surface, transverse waves that are detected by the receiver. The waves are transmitted in both directions. Transmitter and receiver are positioned in the same plane of the test piece.
