<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkaline battery excellent in charge acceptability in a high temperature atmosphere, and also excellent in rapid charge characteristics and a high rate of discharge characteristics. <P>SOLUTION: This alkaline storage battery includes a positive electrode having an active material mainly composed of a nickel hydroxide, a negative electrode, a separator, and an alkali electrolyte, and the surface of the active material of the positive electrode is coated with a solid solution of cobalt hydroxide, nickel hydroxide, and at least one kind of hydroxide selected from a group of Y, Al, Mn, and lanthanoids.
