<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which automatically identifies an inspection unit for inspecting sensors included in a main body section of the image forming apparatus and paper feeding units by being connected to the last end of one or a plurality of the paper feeding units and making communication with the main body section of the image forming apparatus and the paper feeding units by a simple method. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 7 is constituted by successively connecting the one or the plurality of the paper feeding unit 1 to 5 storing the same identification codes from the main body section 8 of the image forming apparatus. The inspection unit 6 which stores the one identification code and makes the inspection of the apparatus 7 possible is connected to the final end of the one or the plurality of the units 1 to 5. The one or the plurality of the units 1 to 5 are successively identified for the plurality of the identification signals successively sent out from the main unit section 8 of the image forming apparatus and the inspection unit 6 is recognized by the last identification signal of the plurality of the successively sent out identification signals.
